Deja Perez, radio personality for WKYS (Radio One, DC), is the voice you hear at night w/ afternoon host, Angie Ang, and nightshow host Shorty Da Prince spilling the tea in her celebrity gossip segment, “What’s Poppin“.

I enjoy her segment because of her flow and her info. She gets it! I can see this radio chick doin’ things in bigger markets! (yeah! Bigger than DC!)

She and I met only one time during my station’s Christmas party and she was very sweet and I’m glad to have had the pleasure to finally put the name with the face! (yeah, even radio chicks do that)

I’m glad Deja decided to grant me this interview I learned more about her and I’m sure you will too!

Station (market/format/timeslot):  93.9 WKYS (DC) I’m on Mon-Fri from 12am-2am. And I also do my “What’s Poppin!” entertainment report Mon-Fri at 6:20 and 8:50

How long have you been in the radio business? Yikes…10 years!

What was it about radio that struck your interest? Being able to reach so many people…with a single mic!

What genre of music do you like to listen to the most and why? EVERYTHING!!! Of course hip-hop, R&B, Reggaeton…plus I’m a little but pop, a little bit country…and a little bit rock n roll!!!

What is your LET IT GO song? (one that you would absolutely lose your mind listening to) don’t judge me…but probably Kelis’s “I Hate You So Much Right Now” and when I need a little Jesus…”Say Yes” Michelle Williams, Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland and also “God In Me” by Mary, Mary.

You’ve interviewed a lot of celebrities, was there ever a time you had an uncomfortable where it went terribly wrong? Describe.  Blessedly…no!!!!

Who was the best celebrity encounter and why? Honestly, it was probably The Game…initially I thought it would be a rough interview because he has such a rough image…and I have a rather smart mouth…and I wasn’t sure how that combination was going to go down…but he totally surprised me…and allowed me to ask him questions…that women would ask men…and he was surprisingly candid with his answers!!!

What’s the biggest misconception about you? Probably that I’m a B*tch!!! LOL…I tend to make faces…and I’m not even aware that I’m making them…that’s gotten me in trouble more times than I can tell you!!!

Why don’t people get about music when it comes to radio? You gotta put in some work to get your music played…first off it needs to be a hot record…than you gotta build up a street buzz…than get the DJ’s to feel the record so hopefully you can get some spins!

Who do you most admire in the radio industry and why? Wow…that’s rough!!! Wendy Williams and Angie Martinez for their longevity in New York. Dyana Williams who is like radio royalty in Philly. Michele Wright, Jeannie Jones and Angie Ange in DC…and really all women that are in the business cuz there are SO few of us!

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? Be yourself…real recognizes real!!!

What’s the biggest misconception about women in radio? That we didn’t earn our positions because of our own talent…when do they ever say a man must have slept with someone to get that job…not never once!!!!

Where do you see urban radio in the next 10-15 years? God willing…we will still be here!

What do you think is wrong, if you do, with hip hop and R&B? I feel like we’ve lost some of the diversity in music…and as a raging feminist…I wish we had more music that promoted women to feel beautiful…and not good for just looking sexy!

Who do you think is the most underappreciated artist out there right now? Too many to list!

Who’s in your iPod/radar?  A lot of 90s hip hop & R&B (I’m such a B-girl!!), I have my neo-soul section (of course Raheem Devaughn’s Queen single…is the new ladies anthem!)…I have a Bust your windows playlist…you can imagine when I need to play that…and of course a FIX IT JESUS playlist too!!!

What do you want your legacy to be? I want to be the go-to source for your entertainment news…cuz I definitely know “What’s Poppin!” but more than that I want to be known for my generous heart and my commitment to family, the community…and I have a special weakness for animals!

Biggest regret is….I haven’t had one yet…all of the stumbles I’ve had along the way…helped prepare me for this moment! Everything is a life lesson!

If you could be one of these, who would it be and why? (funny I know…but I’m curious)  so I’m torn between a Female Super Hero and a Gladiator…cuz I think that would be uber dope…and what I wouldn’t give for a sexy 6-pack of abs!!!
