The Pocket-Sized Fire Cracker Chick: One On One w/ Danielle Fiers

promo-pic.jpg

Danielle Fiers was a promotions assistant at 92Q Jams (Baltimore) for several years. She was the pint-sized chick who used to sing Michael Jackson songs EVERYWHERE!

You would catch Danielle wearing MJ glasses, a t-shirt, maybe rocking a glitter glove and definitely singing an MJ tune; that’s a given!

She doesn’t just LOVE MJ….she REEEEALLY LOVES Michael Jackson!

That’s not just Danielle’s story though. She’s so talented and funny and passionate about music. She sings! She writes! She doesn’t dance much but she tries! (lol)

Danielle Fiers is one of the most disciplined people I know who enjoys what she does! As long as it makes sense, she’s on it!

She left Radio One a few years ago to chase her dream of becoming a singer in LA. She’s taking her time and networking her little ass off!

We check in with each other from time to time. I’m so proud of my “lil’ girl” (something I call her after I heard actress Jennifer Lewis say it in on a ‘Girlfriends’ episode)

She has a few singles out and she’s working hard on an EP! Remember the name: DANIELLE FIERS!

Here’s her story:

Danielle Fiers 1 (Singer Danielle Fiers)

Where are you from? From Baltimore, MD

How long have you been singing? Since the age of 9 in church

What genre of music do you really like to listen to the most and why? I enjoy oldies more than anything…is Michael Jackson a genre?! Can we just turn him into one?! lol Him too!!

What is your LET IT GO song? (one that you would absolutely lose your mind listening to) Ohhh…my “LET IT GO” song? Hmmm…That’s a tough one…so much great music…IDK….between Beyoncé, Janet, and MJ…one of their up tempo songs. But specifically, IDK..lol

Danielle Fiers 2

You’ve worked with lots of singers, song writers, producers in your career. Was there ever a time you had an uncomfortableexperience where it went terribly wrong? Describe. Well!! The first time I went to the studio with a well known Bmore rapper, was my first “Mary Jane” experience. And I’ve never smoked, I just mean SEEING IT!!!! I was sooooo uncomfortable around “The Blunt.” LOL!!! He asked me to hold it for him…I said “Oh…noooo…I don’t want to touch it..” hahahahah

Who was the best celebrity encounter and why? …..*chuckles*…. No, no! I’d have to say meeting Alicia Keys!!!! She walked in and I was singing  her song “No One” and she LOVED IT!!! (Kiki you remember!!). Hearing her tell me I have an amazing voice and letting her know I won Showtime At The Apollo singing and playing her song “If I Ain’t Got You” was EPIC!!!! And her little boy Egypt was too cute! I got to Babysit him while she did the meet and greet!!

Danielle Fiers 7

What’s the biggest misconception about you? The biggest misconception about me is probably people thinking I’m stuck up (**KIKI** lol). I am naturally shy around people I don’t know, and have very little to say in the beginning lol. So really I just quietly observe. Once I know you, you’ll want me to shut up lol!!!

What genre of music would you say doesn’t get the most credit? Ummm.. I’d have to say…singer songwriter maybe? I personally never knew how great acoustic music could be til recently. It has such a laid back feel, I love it.

Danielle Fiers 6

What are your thoughts about independent artists and nationally recognized artists? My thoughts…I mean…in this day in age, I don’t think it matters. As long as you have the final backing you’re good.

Do programs like YouTube, and Spodify give artists a bad name or a greater advantage of being recognized? Greater….anything is a platform

Danielle Fiers 3

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? BE YOURSELF. I think Sam Smith said it best at the Grammy’s… He tried to make music that wasn’t what he felt and it went nowhere. Finally when he was just HIMSELF, he won 4 Grammy’s and took the music world by storm. No fun trying to be like other people.

What’s the biggest misconception about women in this industry? I hate the stigma in general that a female is looked at as a whore if she’s sexual, etc…Especially in this industry where Sex Sells (for the most part). That really GRINDS MY GEARS (Peter Griffin voice lol).

What do you think is wrong, if you do, with hip hop and R&B? I think it’s just evolving like all music. Maybe one day it won’t be so ratchet lol!

Danielle Fiers 5
Who would you want to collaborate a song with and/or tour with? WELL! I am SO PREPARED to tour with The Jacksons!!!! *woop woop* I want to write with
Ne-Yo. He writes great melodies.

What was the funniest thing that happened to you while on tour or during your singing career? Hmm…I can’t think of anything off the top of my head. And to think…people say I’m funny!! But I can’t think of anything..probably having one of my “Blonde” moments.

Who do you think is the most underappreciated artist out there right now? I’d have to say Chris Brown. I hate how people never let stuff go. When the fans and the media can show me that their shit don’t stink, then you can continue to bash him and put him down. For something that happened YEARS AGO!!!!!! Get outta here with that!! #judgment smh “Let ye without sin cast the first stone” – Jesus #BOOM

Who’s in your iPod/radar? MYSELF

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? DEFINITELY songwriting for major artists

If singing wasn’t your “thing”, what else would you be doing? Psychology…I’m SO into the human mind.

Danielle Fiers 8

What do you want your legacy to be? “Damn she was amazing!! Wow! she was so little too!!” hahahahahaha!!

What’s your guilty pleasure? Reality TV!!! the more ratchet the better lol!

Danielle Fiers 9

This Chick’s Cookin’ Something Good!!! One On One w/ Felicia Covel of Xquisite Catering

2014-06-10 06.31.52

One day, I received a gift bag from someone I didn’t know. This isn’t something happens normally so I was a bit apprehensive when I stared at it for about 5 minutes.

A few of my co-workers received the same gift bag so immediately, we linked up to see what was inside.

There were 5 prepared meals; a gift from Felicia Covel of Xquisite Catering LLC. There was a note thanking us for our support and wishing us a week of enjoyment.

Who would turn down free food? Then again, this food was different. It was made with love, careful hands, and passion. I had no idea who this person was but her food WAS DA BOMB DOT COM!! (yes, I said that in all caps)

Since then, I had been ordering my weekly prepared meals from Xquisite Catering and posting them on my IG page (cause that what IG is for). I pray it’s done something in regards to getting the world out because the food is, to quote Mos Def in Brown Sugar, “delicious and nutritious.” (lol)

If you’re planning a wedding reception, picnic, romantic meal, or whatever, you’re gonna have to contact Xquisite and set it up! It’ll be one investment you wouldn’t regret!

I had to sit down with the CEO, Felicia Covel, to find out how she does it: family, business, social life, EVERYTHING!

Felicia Coval 2 (Felicia Covel, CEO Xquisite Catering LLC)

Why did you decide catering as your career?

I chose catering because I have always loved to cook. I have been cooking since I was 5 years old at home. I bounced around from restaurants to assistant living homes until one day I landed a job as a local caterer. That’s where I fell in love. It was the excitement of going out to a beautiful venue, transforming the space, serving the guest at an event. Every event was different and every event left me excited to do the next one.

What was the first time you realized you could do this for a living?

It was while working at that local catering company where I realized I could be a business owner of a catering company. I met some great people and learned a lot while working there. I went from prepping in the kitchen to lead chef for events, it was then I gained experience & confidence that I could do this on my own.

Felicia Coval 4

What makes you happy about doing what you do?

I love meeting new clients; listening to their vision and making it come to life and being part of their memory by giving them great food. I am very happy when I’m in the kitchen, when I am preparing for an event. We work such long hours but in the end it’s all worth it when the client is happy.

Who do you follow in this industry and why?

I follow everyone in local area (chef’s, restaurants, and carry-outs); I like to know what our local competition is doing and also support them as well. We have to stay up on the new trends and ideas to bring them here and continue to inspire me. I love to also follow caterers in major cities like New York, Miami, Chicago and L.A. to name a few.

Felicia Coval 5

What is the most challenging dish you ever made?

It would have to be the dish I made recently. A couple wanted to incorporate a few Caribbean dishes into their wedding reception. They wanted Red Stew & Jollof Rice. (Sounds easy right? Lol). I have never cooked this a day in my life before. It wasn’t difficult for me to prepare; the challenging part for me was not knowing what it should taste like but to also make it taste good. I was sooo nervous! I prepared it and it came out amazing. I’m not sure if it tasted like authentic Caribbean Red Stew but it was the best stew I’ve ever had. Needless to say, the couple loved it.

I plan on putting it on the menu. I may change the name of the dish though lol

Felicia Coval 1

What won’t you ever make, regardless of the request?

I don’t think I will ever deny a request. Any challenge just tests my skills as Executive Chef and keeps me sharp in all areas. Also in the catering industry what you won’t/can’t make another chef will. I never want to turn a client away. I can always try and I may surprise myself and the clients.

I would say your job is a pretty demanding one. What do you enjoy most from your job?

Yes, it is very demanding; very long hours (nights and weekends). 10-12 hours of standing but I forget all of that at the end of an event when our client is smiling and praising me and my team for a job well done. It’s months of planning and meetings, hours of prepping, setting up and breaking down, but most enjoyable part is us knowing our client is happy with the service they received from Xquisite Catering LLC as we want to “Xceed Your Catering Xpectations.”

Xquisite catering

What is the most irritating thing about your job?

(Can I be honest for all business owners here?)….I would say when we have difficult clients i.e. clients that say that they know what that want with “no budget” and then when time comes after we have given them exactly what they wanted, they say “no” because of the price. But what they fail to realize is we can work with whatever your number is, it’s a help me to help you situation; you have to be honest with yourself and me because you are wasting time which can be spent on figuring things out for you “honest budget”.
What is the biggest misconception about doing what you do?

The biggest misconception is that it’s EASY. It is far from easy; it takes long days and nights. It takes dedication, hard work, and mental toughness, patience & teamwork. There have been nights where I and my team  haven’t slept because we were prepping all night and went straight to the event in the morning and to another event after that. dealing with the elements of the weather seasons; grueling hot summer days to cold winter days which everyone is not good dealing with.  Don’t get me wrong, MY TEAM & I LOVE WHAT WE DO so nothing matter’s ; sleep, being tired, cold weather, hot weather.

Felicia Coval 5

When people order or request your services, what is the take away?

My goal that they take with them is great memories. We work hard to make sure our clients and their guest experience a night they will not forget. From the food and service to ambiance we create. That’s Xquisite Catering’s guarantee when we cater the event will be a night to remember.

Who would you love to cater for and why?

I would love a chance to cater for a politician from Maryland (Mayor Or Governor). I would love to get into that circle to get city-wide exposure. Every caterer has catered one event that took their business to the next level, I believe catering for one would do that for Xquisite and I know that our time is coming in due time.

felicia coval 3

What do you want the Baltimore community to know about Xquisite Catering?

I would like for Baltimore to know how hard Xquisite worked to get where we are and how hard we will continue to work. We put everything we have into each and every event that we cater, no matter how big or small. Every client is treated with the same respect and is given the same excellent customer service. We understand everyone can’t afford a $10k catered wedding ceremony and that is why we are willing to work with everyone (just like in the world you have to think about the middle class and average people it’s not about the high class all the time). Everyone deserves the same great quality no matter their budget which we are big on. We have wedding reception packages for every budget. We have come a long way in the past 3 years and we continue to grow with each event that we cater. It’s tough competing with the well-known companies that have been around for years but we are here to stay! We want to become a household name, we want everyone to know about Xquisite Catering LLC. I believe that our city will continue to support us and help us become one of the largest catering companies in Baltimore.

Having a small business in this time is pretty difficult to do for most people. What is your secret to longevity?

My secret is simple….HARD WORK! You have to be willing to put every ounce of energy you have into your work & making the client’s happy. It’s my name that is on the line every event. whether it’s a full service or a drop-off event, I put everything I have into every event and I think it shows. our clients see that and appreciate it. Hard work goes a long way into and it definitely pays off.

Felicia coval 8

Where do you see Xquisite Catering in the next 5-10 years?

My partner/ Fiancé Sunil and I would love to have our own facility/venue . I can’t wait until the say I own my own venue. I can picture it so clearly in my head. (Huge kitchen & chandeliers at the entrance, maybe a fountain) In my head it’s beautiful.

If you didn’t cater, what would you be doing?

Honestly I can’t imagine doing anything else. This is where I belong, no second-guessing that, I love what I do!

felicia coval 7

One event you’ll never cater is what? Why?

That’s a tough one but it would just have to be an event or situation that would go against our beliefs, something that would tarnish Xquisite Catering LLC and me. We have worked hard to build an image of Xquisite and as you know it’s easy to lose that but sometimes you have to pass on things in life for the greater good.

How can you be reached? (email, social media, etc.)

All My Single Mothers…All My Single Mothers….

promo-pic.jpg

As a single mother, I go through many challenges in raising my only son, Vaughn (age 17). I’m preparing for that day that he will one day leave me for college, military and life. He has no idea what his future holds, nor do I, but I want him to  know that no matter what, I’m here for him.

This message is to all those mothers, raising a teenage son or daughter. Please stay strong! Know that all your hard work will not go un-noticed. Your child will understand LATER what you were trying to teach them; just not now.

How to Parent a Rebellious Teenager

I am thankful that I have his biological father and the special love in my life to help me, BUT…he’s still my child and the bond we share is one that not many can comprehend.

Common Problems Faced by Parents When Raising Teenage Boys

IMG_5447[1]

My darling,

When the doctor told me that I was pregnant, I was in complete shock! Like, for real! Me? Pregnant? I knew then, that my life wouldn’t be the same. (In a good way)

Since day one, I was in love! I found love for the first time. I thought it was something a man could give me but I was so wrong. It was your little hands and your mouth and your little butt (lol). It was the feeling I had when you fell asleep and I stayed up watching you; making sure you were breathing. Love to me at that time was breathing and learning. It was the thought that from that point forward, I would never be alone. EVER!

IMG_5671[1]

Today, you’re 17 and you’re going through so many changes that it’s so hard for me to be that “mommy” figure and make the boo-boo’s go away. I’m “weird” and I “don’t understand” you. The feeling that I have now is so foreign because it’s not something “we” had before. I get it. You’re growing up. Now, I have to stand back and allow you to be a man. Even though, what I’m seeing from you right now, isn’t that of any man but simply of a male (huge difference).

People have told me many times that one day, I’ll have to “cut the cord” but I was never comfortable with that idea. I honestly don’t think ANY mother is. If they say they are, they’re totally lying!

Being a mother, let alone a single mother (wait) a single mother to a young black male is extremely hard!  I watch the news about young black men dying in the hands of the police or other young black men. I think about that mother….damn! I just couldn’t imagine…

I begin to think to myself, “Jesus, help me! How can I do this? Who can do this? What am I supposed to do now? He’s talking about the military and/or college? Can I afford it? Can he do it? Can I do this? Can I let him go?”

IMG_5497

Many women in my position go through the same thing everyday. What makes my story so unique? It’s my story!

Son, I don’t have all the answers. I don’t know what the future holds. What I do know is that the world is cruel and it’s not as easy as the video games you dedicate hours to portray life to be. It’s not about gaining more lives or earning a “chicken” to keep you safe and warm at night.

You have to pay close attention to your surroundings, ask questions, do the work, stay humble, be respectful, have understanding, and yeah, I’ll say it again, do the work!

My father was the “talker” and my mother was the “punisher” and I didn’t like either one of them when I was your age. I’ll tell you this much; if it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here sending this open letter to you!

I want to save you! I want to love on you! I want to have all the answers! I want to be mommy! But I know that I can’t be; not now.

IMG_4556

I have to be the woman who really, really cares about her son; who wants her to fall back a little. I have to be the woman who knows her son (her only son) has a life to live but realizes that life is HIS and not HERS.

As the tears roll down my cheek, I pray to GOD that HE continues to protect you and teach you at the same time. Teach you the lessons that I, your father, Mr. T, or anyone else that matters to your upbringing could.

One day, beloved, you will see that life isn’t a 3D movie. It’s harsh, it’s hard, it’s a challenge, it’s unfair, it’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s rude, it’s beautiful, it’s LIFE! And it’s YOURS!

IMG_4568

I’ll always be here for you. I’ll always be here to make the boo-boo’s better. Even if you don’t want me to.

I love you more than any breath, than any romantic gesture, or movie. More than life itself! Know that.

I hope this helps all those mothers out there who are going through something.

We met in LA! We walked down Rodeo Drive like we owned it! Taking selfies and waving at strangers as if we were in a parade!

In addition to the other radio chicks that I met during our 24 hour trip to LA for the Baggage Claim junket, radio personality Tasha Simone and I clicked almost immediately!

We discussed our passion for radio and wondered why it was so hard for other radio chicks to click the way that we did! I told her about the mission to create a female friendly network for women in radio and without asking any questions, the midday personality for Hot 1077 Birmingham was on board!

Tasha’s so cool, she didn’t even snitch on me when I “borrowed” the salt & pepper shaker from the Four Seasons Hotel restaurant. She a ride or die chick, for real! Haaa!!!

Have you read this awesome story on this awesome chick?

Quinn Conyersis a woman with ambition, spunk, a vision and talent! She knows it too! She doesn’t just settle for the NOW. She focuses on the TOMORROW.

I met Quinn when she started working as an account executive for Radio One Baltimore; later to find out we have a mutual acquaintance (family related).

Quinn, or the Purse Paparrazi, was always hosting these parties (I have yet to attend) that showcased these beautiful handbags and the women who were uber excited to have one in their “clutches”. (see what I did there?)

It’s not about her handbag business that I wanted to profile in this one one one with Quinn. She’s an entrepreneur; a visionary. She is a public speaker and a leader. She has taught college courses and energizes potential leaders to take the reigns of their own destiny and dominate. If you’re looking for a public speaker or…

The person he called was a person whom he admired and trusted; someone he knew would help me and give me all the information I needed. He called Angie Ange of WKYS in Washington, DC.

After the small talk, he then said “I have my midday girl in my office…” and she said “Ki Ki Brown Holdin’ it down!!!” Wait! What???? She knew who I was!

This Chick Is In The Zone: One On One w/ Autumn Joi of 92Q Jams

2014-06-10 06.31.52

She’s the newest radio personality you hear weeknights and some weekends on 92Q Jams (Baltimore, MD) who has an extensive radio history with a few top markets.

Her name is Autumn Joi and I met her in passing several months ago. I had no idea who she was and after asking several people, I still didn’t know. Throughout my “quest”, I found out she’s “cool” and “talented”. I also found out she used to work for WPGC 95.5 (Washington, DC) for a while.

That didn’t help me either. You see, when there’s a new “jock” added to the roster, most program directors (no shade) refrain from bringing them around to meet the vets. It’s something that happens quite often and with that, it’s not welcomed in a positive light.

It feeds the insecure thoughts of “who is she?” or “I know she’s not going to take my job!” and the famous “Hmmm…let’s see what she’s gonna do.” (Don’t act like you ain’t never had those thoughts!)

One day, I’m at a remote for a local furniture store and I had to call into the station to do my “callback” when Autumn answers the phone. The bubbly voice and excitement threw me off a bit but I found it to be pretty welcoming. She and I exchanged our professional banter and carried on throughout our day.

After the remote, I HAD to see who this Autumn Joi chick was. She was the exact match to the voice I heard over the phone and on the air.

She’s mad cool and super talented. And most importantly, she’s eager to gain more knowledge that she already has; being a veteran in this industry for 13 years.

If you’ve never listened to Autumn Joi before, check her out weeknights as the new host for the Love Zone on 92Q Jams.

Autumn 1Autumn-Joi, 92Q Jams Baltimore – Sundays 10am to 3pm and pretty much fill in for everyone LOL

How long have you been in the radio business?  Been doing radio for over 13 years
How long were you in the television business? Been doing TV for about 7 years
What is more enjoyable/different?  I enjoy being able to be my crazy self and its accepted by the listeners!
Would you say it’s hard to work with/for women in radio than it is to work with/for men? I’ve experienced hardship from both men and women in this industry especially starting out. Women were intimidated by men and men felt like I was just a young girl who had no clue.
Autumn 2
What do you think is the most challenging being a talent in your career? Honestly the biggest challenge is breaking into the industry and making a reputable name for yourself.
Did you (or do you) have a mentor in radio? If so, who are they and what have they helped you on in reference to your career? Donnie Simpson was my mentor and the first person to EVER let me crack the mic! He’s the reason why I decided to use my government name instead of coming up with a stage name AND he taught me the importance of being true to you and to NEVER conform!
What was it about radio that struck your interest?  I became addicted to radio early! I remember taking my little black tape recorder and recording myself introducing songs off the radio and playing it back for my family! After hearing myself on WPGC 95.5, I remember thinking “WOW that’s me!” and “I sound good!”
Autumn 4
What makes a good radio talent? Being YOU is what makes a good talent. Don’t try to mimic anyone! Come up with original material and build your brand around that.
How do you respond to women in the media who become out of touch from those trying to reach that particular level of success? Women that don’t help other women are usually intimidated by their potential. When you lose touch with where you came from and don’t reach back out to help, karma WILL catch up with you!
Have you ever been fired? How did you bounce back?  YUP! I got fired in 2006 and boy did i feel like the world was over! i thought my career was done and no one would EVER hire me again. After i got myself together i realized that i would of fired me too but i decided to not let it define me so i moved to NY in 2008 and ended up in an even better position on Shade 45 🙂
Autumn 3
What genre of music do you like to listen to the most and why? I LOVE LOVE LOVE top 40 radio! I would love to end up on a station that plays a mix of Hip Hop and Pop!
What is your LET IT GO song? (one that you would absolutely lose your mind listening to) My go crazy song is Ice Cream Paint Job by Dorrough! i still love that song and truly believe he didnt get the credit he deserved for it
You’ve interviewed a lot of celebrities, was there ever a time you had an uncomfortable celebrity interview where it went terribly wrong? Describe. Interviewed Shy Glizzy for my internet radio show and it started out pretty slow because he was fresh off the road and was not interested in doing anything except sleeping. We ended up actually having a great interview in the end but it started off rocky.
Autumn 1
Who was the best celebrity encounter and why? Hands down best celebrity experience was working with 50 Cent at G-Unit! He is the most intellegent and down to earth person I’ve encountered! He also gave me great advice about my career that i still hold true to today!
What don’t people get about music when it comes to radio? When it comes to radio people don’t get that i don’t control the music so NO i wont play your demo LMAO
Who do you most admire in the radio industry and why?I absolutely love Deja Vu on The Heat on satellite radio. Her personality sounds so fun and energetic and i always feel like she’s speaking directly to her listeners.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? Best advice I’ve received is to keep your business to yourself!!!!!!!!!!

Autumn 2
What’s the biggest misconception about women in radio? I don’t think women really have to many misconceptions anymore. We are everywhere in the industry now and pretty much have taken over 🙂

Where do you see urban radio in the next 10-15 years?  Urban Radio will be more interactive within the next 10 to 15 years. Personalities will have to be more technology savvy.

Who do you think is the most under appreciated artist out there right now? The most unappreciated artist is Teedra Moses!!!!!! her music is amazing and i feel like she doesn’t get the support or love she deserves.
Autumn 3
If you could give advice to someone wanting to be a radio personality, what would you say? The best advice I can give someone starting out in radio is to intern. Interning opens up so many doors and truly allows you to see the inner workings of the industry. Also understand that Rome wasnt built in one night so dont expect to hop on air your first day, gotta crawl first!
Biggest regret is… moving away from New York. I truly believe i would be further along in my career if I had stayed BUT i do think God put me exactly where i needed to be and for that i am thankful!

Amy Eagan and her partner, Tavares Evans, decorated a cake for Alicia Keys and Robin Thicke when they came to Baltimore for a show. I was amazed at their work! I hadn’t heard about Cakes2AT since that day and even then, I wasn’t completely sold; just really impressed.

It was the day Tavares and Amy walked in with a special cake for Kelson (The UrbanInformer) that I knew I had to have a Cakes2AT cake! And I did!

I absolutely LOVED my birthday cake! I mean, who wouldn’t?

cakes to a t2 (my birthday cake…everything was edible)

Since then, I stayed connected with Amy and Tavares and developed a trusting and solid relationship.

Amy has always been so open to sharing her opinions when I needed them for show topics and for that I’m forever grateful.

I decided to highlight Amy’s career because when you think about the business she’s in, it’s rare a co-owner or designer is a woman. Tavares will tell you in a minute how he loves Amy and how she completes the unit they have together. She is the strong woman behind (or beside) the “every man” saying.

Amy Eagan is funny, intelligent, genuine, honest and a pretty cool chick! She’ll tell you she isn’t worthy of “too much” praise, but she will gladly accept a compliment, because knows in her heart, she does what she does because she loves how it feels in it.

Here is Amy’s story:

Amy Eaga 3

What is your occupation?

I am co-owner and cake artist at Cakes 2-A-T

How many careers/jobs have you had before you landed this one?

I currently still work managing the web site for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. I have been at Hopkins my entire professional career.

Amy Eagan4 (Cakes2AT owners Tavares Evans, Amy Eagan and Alicia Keys)

Which one would you say you’re most proud of?

I am the most proud of the cake company because it is something T and I created together from a prayer and a dream.

Amy Eagan1

How did you get started in your career?

Bear with me now, you’re asking something deeper. You’re asking about my love story!

Preface: Tavares and I grew up in the same hometown. Our parents ran the local gridiron club for football and cheerleading. So at the end of practice every day, we would run around the field, waiting on our parents, who were waiting on the other parents to pick up all the kids! One day, we kissed on the playground! We were each other’s first kiss. I never forgot that moment or him. He moved away in high school and I really hadn’t seen him but one time at the local rival’s high school basketball game where we saw each other across the room, smiled and he walked me to the car. I still had a heart for him, but we were to go 2 our separate ways. I’ve always loved the world of ART. I graduated high school in the ART Honors Society and in college, I dual-majored in Communications, as well as Art. Tavares went into the Air Force where he was stationed in Las Vegas, NV and lived when he found me on MYSPACE some 15 years later J  We became the best of friends through emails and phone calls.

After a couple years, my long-lost love returned into my life in December of 2007 that also meant moving “home” to Baltimore and starting anew. There was a long period where he couldn’t find a job in the midst of the recession! He had a long career as a pastry chef in the US Air Force. I knew what he did in his career, but it wasn’t until I kept losing him in the stores and find him in the cake department in the grocery store or the decorating tools at craft shops. I started to see pretty quickly, this man had a real PASSION, and it was for cakes. Cakes always were something I thought would be “FUN” to do, but I had only decorated few for my son as a project, like most moms attempt and then decide it’s easier just to buy one! Ha.

So I kept telling T, “You know I think I would be really good at decorating cakes. I have my art background and you have the experience. We could start a cake company and sell to our friends! This would help us a little until you find something steady!” Time went on and our relationship started to be tested by the trials of being broke and lacking in faith. It wasn’t until his grandmother showed up on his brother’s doorstep, a place where he randomly landed to print directions one day to a job interview. His evangelical grandmother could see it in his eyes, he was broken. When she started to talk to him, long story short, she asked him, “Honey, you never asked me for anything. So tell me, what is it you want, a barbershop or a bakery?” he said, “I love to cut hair, but my passion is cakes! Amy and I have been talking about this and we really think we could do well if we started a cake company. We just didn’t have the means to even start.” She said, “Well ok, then both of you put together a business proposal for me and meet me two days from now, downtown in Baltimore.” When we met up, she barely paged through the proposal we spent hours creating. She just wanted to see we were serious! Then she looked at me and started questioning me, only like a Grandmother could. “Now Amy,” she said looking straight into my eyes, “why do you think you and T can start a company together? How do you know you will be together? Why do you love my grandson? How do you know he’s the one for you” with without hesitations, I answered honestly and easily. We had become the best of friends before we moved home and there was so much time to get to know each other. Once he came home there was something in my gut that told me, he’s the ONE. I just know it.” She wrote us a check right there, prayed over us and the company, she prayed God would provide and if we stay aligned with him, we will soar! She then told us, “This is not a loan, but you can just repay me by being successful.” We decided to re-dedicate our lives to the Lord and give it ALL to him.

Amy Eagan4

So that’s how our company was born. We went out, bought a few things and posted on facebook that we were doing cakes! And we took off! Within 4 months we were presenting Alicia Keys a cake, in conjuntion with our new friends at 92Q. Over the years we feel as if the RADIO ONE team is part of our Cakes 2-A-T family!

Amy Eagan 2 (Amy & Tavares w/ Torrey Smith and wife Chanel)

What other talents to you have that NO ONE knows about until now?

Well, most of my friends know I LOVE TO DANCE. But since I’ve been playing grown up, I rarely get to dance anymore. I danced from 3-17 in schools for dance and even competed a little in tap and jazz. I grew up just before hip hop became part of organized dancing. Sometimes I think if I grew up a little later, I would have been a choreographer. I also have a motorcycle license and love to ride bikes. One day, maybe I will buy another 🙂 I haven’t ridden in years.

What is the biggest or most important accomplishment you were given?

Well that’s easy. Being a young single mom, raising a son! No matter what “jobs” I’m ever given, my most important accomplishment will always be my son.

Amy Eagan 3

What’s the biggest misconception about what you do and how do you respond to it?

The biggest misconception is that what I do is that it’s  “just cake.” I don’t paint on canvas, or sculpt statues or graphically design something that will be used in an ad. I do however do all of that work, for a temporary enjoyment in an edible medium. It’s still ART. It still takes time, skill and talent and our cakes are priced on those things (although they taste really good too! Hehe) Most people think T has taught me decorating or I have taken classes or watch online videos, but mostly everything I do is on the spot and self-taught, with minimal “molds” and templates.

Amy Eagan5

Would you say that you understand the difference between gifts and talents? What are your gifts and talents?

Yes, that is something I have learned more recently in my walk with God. You can have many talents in life, but gifts are those special things that God has assigned to you to help accomplish your destiny, for HIM. Your talents are things you enjoy, and others enjoy when you do them. Gifts are WHO you are not WHAT you are. My talents are my creative side. I am a talented in my skills, artsy stuff like cake-making, dancing, I’m pretty good at some sports too J However, my gifts assigned by God are completely different. My two biggest GIFTS are wisdom and faith. With both of those comes my gift of encouragement or exhortation. I very much enjoy spending my time lifting up those around me and encouraging people to have faith. I want them know everything isn’t going to be fine, it’s going to be great! And I really believe those things. I am 100% believer in Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

If you really LOVE GOD, he will make it all work together, even the bad things, for HIS BENEFIT.

KevinHart cake(Comedian/Actor Kevin Hart)

Have you ever made a cake and had to stand back and say DAMN!

Ha! Yes, actually the last cake we made. I had to make pizza from sugar. I spent days pondering, praying, researching and in the end, I stood back and said……… DAGGGGG, I did that? Haha

Amy Eagan 6 (2 Chainz)

Were you ever on the receiving end of a customer or client’s reaction that surprised you so much it made you think about why you do what you do? Describe.

The first thing that comes to mind, is the cake we made for Snoop Dogg.  Sometimes, when you make a cake for someone so famous and so rich, you think maybe they have seen something like our cakes before and it wont be a HUGE deal to them. Although, most celebs we’ve done cakes for are so gracious and thankful, overly complementing us. There was something about Snoop’s reaction that was a little different. From the second we walked in, he was “wooo-weeeeing” and “daaaaannnnngin” He sat with this cake and kept staring at it smiling. He kept talking about it and showing it off to everyone in the room. He took pictures with us and even free-styled a rap for us on video! We tried to leave several times, literally, but got called back because “Snoop wanted HIS CAKE PEOPLES!” haha. You know, I think its not the celebrity fascination but more, that someone at his status can still appreciate our work as something unique and worthy, and he chooses to let us know!

This just makes me sit and smile and think about how no matter how old, what color, man or female, tough or soft, our cakes get the SAME REACTION. They can turn the hardest man into a sweet child! It’s the most amazing feeling to be able to give people a few moments to be a care-free child in spirit!! Even the MAN, Snoop Dogg himself!! It’s just THEE BEST feeling.

cakes 2AT3

Where do you see your business going in the next few years?

Cakes 2-A-T isn’t just a cake company, it’s a movement. Both T and I feel like this company is a platform from which GOD will launch us into his plan for our lives, to motivate, empower, and assist the people in Baltimore, from under-privileged high-risk kids to the needy and homeless. We’re not sure exactly how or when, but we know it’s going to happen. We are building a very large network of people who love to help and also people who have the skills that we will need to expand in this type of way. We’re hoping the world can see CAKES 2-A-T on the screen one day soon as well! Plans are in motion. Pray for us!! 🙂

Common cake (Common)

Do you EVER HATE CAKE? (lol)

A lot of people in the industry may think I’m lying but I am so serious when I answer, “No. Never.” I never hate them as a job decorating and I never hate the taste! Ha (sometimes I wish I did)

Amy Eaga 3

If you were awarded an OSCAR, who would be the FIRST THREE people you would thank and how would your speech go?

My parents (they are one) for teaching me kindness, compassion, forgiveness and to love the person I am, no matter who tells me any different. They taught me I can be and do anything I want. Next would be Tavares, for taking the person I was and helping me to become a greater me by our long talks about God and the direction of our lives and future. I am secure in knowing he loves me as I am now and has pledged he will love me as I grow. It’s exciting to share not only LIFE with someone you love, but your dreams too! Lastly, but NOT least (but you only gave me 3! Lol), my spiritual best friend, Kim Morris for being the person I go to for spiritual guidance and sometimes to just be a “girl” raw, honest, heart-broken, searching and needing prayer… but also who celebrates my victories as if they were her own. She is a great source of my strength through her sisterhood and constant prayer over my life.

I never thought a cake decorator would have a bad story (sarcasm) but do you have one you’d be happy to share?

I had to think hard about this one because my, are we blessed with the best customers! There was this one time. ONE TIME we let someone come and pick up their 3-tier custom carved Dr. Suess cake. We offer free delivery and we assured them, we could bring it. But, they insisted they would do it. So we let her. We gave her all the directions, “drive like you have your infant child in your car not in a car seat!” lol. Within 20 mins we got the call and a picture, that the cake “spontanueously combusted,” you know, it just exploded on it’s own. LONG STORY short, we offered a refund even though we KNEW that happened because of a quick turn on the road… and….. we never did that again! We’d rather offer free delivery and have all our hours of hard work make it to the location safe, than chance it!

Amy Eagan1

If there was something you’ve never done before but you were given the opportunity to do it today, what would it be?

Be a radio host! haha… no seriously, I’ve always dreamed of being on radio and I’ve been told I have a radio voice, sultry and raspy kinda like KiKi Brown’s!! haha…. I think that can still be a reality down the road later in life.

What is your favorite quote and why?

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.

This was the first scripture I memorized. It was told to me soon after I was saved, from a coworker who became one of my best friends. She told me here, memorize this, and it will be the one scripture you lean on in every circumstance.

And man, she was right! If I just trust in the LORD and in ALL my way acknowledge him. Sometimes we know we’re not giving him something, but when we finally acknowledge, “HE is GOD!!!!!” and we give it to HIM, everything seems to fall in place. This helps me every time I get overwhelmed by life. This is the basics of LIFE, the simple meaning of “God’s GOT YOU!”

More phenomenal chicks I’d love for you to read about:

“The” Premier Chick: One On One w/ Tabitha Richardson, Premiere Homes Realty

2014-06-10 06.31.52

Tabitha Richardson agreed to speak to my Charm School about the importance behind making smart decisions and how those decisions can lead to a smarter lifestyle. Although the eyes and ears listening were between the ages of 10 and 17, Tabitha made it a point to attracted them with appetizing references about wants and needs as well as renting and owning.

What the children didn’t know was Mrs. Richardson was reaching an audience of renters and dreamers. Parents in attendance realized they could own their dream home if only they followed the right steps towards their goals.

I wanted to know how she got started in the business of real estate because you have to be a special “kind of something” to be a woman (let alone an African American woman) in a male dominated business like real estate.

  • How is she received by her customers?
  • Are men harder on her than women (or vice verse)?
  • Does she specialize to just one genre or can anyone purchase a home/business?

I was so excited when Tabitha decided to set aside some time from her busy schedule to grant me with this interview. Enjoy!

TabithaR6

Are you from Baltimore?

No, I’m originally from the Bronx, NY.  I transferred here with my job Verizon in 2002.

What is your occupation?

I own a real estate brokerage, Premier Homes Realty, in Owings Mills, MD.  I started out as a part-time Realtor in 2005 and then eventually went full-time.

Did you go to college (where/major)?

I did two year of college in New York at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and then I finished my Bachelors of Science in Management with the University of Phoenix.

TabithaR3

How long have you been in this profession?

I’ve been in sales since I started working out of high school.  However, I’ve been a licensed Realtor since 2005 and a Broker/Owner since 2012.

What is it about this industry that struck your interest?

I initially got into this field by accident.  After I bought my first home in Maryland, I had a few friends and colleagues ask how they can buy a home too.  After I referred a few friends to my Realtor, I realized instead of referring people I could become a Realtor myself.  After working with a few clients, I realized I enjoyed helping families become home buyers.  It is a rewarding experience to be able to give someone the keys to their first home!

TabithaR2

Are there challenges in this industry being a woman?  Or an African-American women in this industry?

I believe every industry has its own challenges, however being a woman in real estate has many advantages.  As a Realtor, you are an independent contract which allows you flexibility.  In any sales job, your success is determined by ability to market yourself to your sphere of influence.  As an African-American woman, I feel this is a great industry to be in.

What is the biggest misconception about the real estate company today?

Some of the misconceptions of being a Realtor is the amount of time, work and energy needed to be successful.  Some people believe they can get their license and the business will come.  However to be successful you should have great people skills, have sales experience, know how to promote and market yourself effectively, have excellent follow up skills and be able to manage/maintain paperwork.

TabithaR5

How easy/difficult is it for families to buy a home or commercial property today?

After the real estate market declined, it was very difficult to purchase a home.  You had to jump through a lot of hoops in order to get financing.  A lot of safeguards have been put in place so we do not have another real estate crash.  Today, the market is doing well.  More and more people are purchasing homes again and become first-time home buyers.  There are several first-time home buyer grants available to assist families with down payment funds to buy a house.

What are your techniques in helping families obtain a home/commercial property?

The first step in purchasing a home is to get pre-qualified for a loan.  A prospective home buyer would need to contact a lender to start this process.  The lender would pull the homebuyers credit to see if they can be pre-qualified now or if additional steps are needed before pre-qualification.  Based on what the lender says, will determine how to move forward.  I encourage anyone thinking of buying to contact a lender to see what is need to purchase a house.  Things to consider are credit score, financial investment and timing.

What is the biggest upset that you encounter while performing your job? (ex: when clients don’t follow through, lack of knowledge, etc.)

As a Realtor, we are 100% commission based.  We do not make any money until the client closes on their home.  If the client does not purchase, we do not make a commission.  With that said, as a Realtor we spend a lot of our time and money to assist our clients with finding a house.  The biggest disappointment is when our clients do not respect the time and effort we give to them.

There have been many times when I was at a house waiting for a client to show up and then they call at the appointment time to say they cannot make it.  It is a disappointment, however we have to maintain our professionalism and continue to provide the best customer service we can.  At the end of the day, the goal is to make our clients happy!

kurly gurly pic

Do you have another business/hobby that takes your mind off of your demanding job? If so, what is it?

I have another company I started called Kurly Gurly.  It is a line of satin lined baseball caps designed to help reduce damage to your natural hair when wearing hats.  I create this line while going through my own natural hair journey.  I felt if this was going to help me, then maybe there are other woman who would be interested in a hat with a satin-lining too.

10462620_913410128676118_3278540278360316735_n

Why did you decide to take up this particular “hustle”?

I am a serial entrepreneur so if I see an opportunity, I am going to explore it.  I love the process of starting a business and developing it.  With Kurly Gurly, it was just something that I thought would fill a need in the natural hair industry.

Do you recommend most women take up an additional hobby/trade/career for fulfillment?

Managing one career as an entrepreneur is hard enough!  I think before anyone starts another job, career or hobby, they should first make sure they are successful in their main field.  However, if taking up a second hustle helps to make you happy and feel more fulfilled, then I say go for it!

TabithaR3

How does your professional career/interest help the community?

I really do enjoy what I do!  I help people who never thought they could buy a house realize that that dream is available to them too.  I help to educate my community on the real estate industry so they are equipped with the knowledge to make educated decisions.  I get so excited when I get messages from people asking me to help them buy their first house.  I try to provide useful real estate information on my Facebook page on a weekly basis.

With owning my real estate brokerage, it give me the opportunity to help people who want to become Realtors by training them and assisting them to become independent Realtors.

Where do you see your career going in the next five years?

My goal is to continue to build my real estate brokerage to help those who are seeking a career in real estate and to help more people buy and sell houses.  I am also seeking to get certified to offer new license training for prospective Realtors.

TabithaR 4

What advice do you have for a college student looking to work in your field?

This is a great field for a college student.  It will offer them additional income and allow them the flexibility to create their schedules around school.  They also have a huge lead source of people/friends that are looking to rent houses and buy property.  There are many college students that are real estate investors looking to buy houses to rent out to other college students.

How do you maintain a positive attitude while working in your field?

There are a lot of things that can frustrate you in any job, however I always try to look at the bigger picture of what I’m trying to accomplish.  I also like to keep positive people around me that help to build and motivate me.

TabithaR 1

Describe an amazing success story (for either profession if not both).

I find joy every time one of my clients get’s the keys to a new home.  But I love the feeling I get when a new Agent I’ve trained has their first closing.  I love the saying, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime!”

TabithaR 7

What is something about you that no one knows but you’d be willing to share?

I am an early bird!.  I wake up early in the morning (weekends included) and I love to read motivational books that inspire me to be a better wife, mother, friend and business woman.  I also go to bed super early.  By 10pm I am knocked out because I need 7-8 hours of sleep to be able to function the next day.

Best advice someone ever gave you was…

Just do it!  Many times we get caught up in the details of things and it hinders us from moving forward.  I can be a bit of a perfectionist so sometimes I’ll get caught up in making sure all details are perfect instead of just moving forward.  This trait can be a curse and a blessing.  One thing I’ve learned is that everything does not have to be perfect to be good.

TabithaR2

(Finish the sentence) “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for….” the grace in God.  Trusting and believing in God for he has been an integral part of the success I’ve achieved!

(Finish the sentence) “In order to finish this ‘race’, I need to have…” an increased faith in God along with the close support of my friends and family.

Best quote that gets you through…

Matthews 25:23

His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

Luke 1:37

For with God nothing should be impossible.
