Today, I’m profiling another powerful women in the recording industry.

Meet Danielle Lott, the Urban Regional Promotion Manager of the Mid-Atlantic & North Carolina at Republic Records/Universal Records. Which means, she represents clients like Lorde, Taylor Swift, Drake, Lil’ Wayne, and Nicki Minaj! (just to drop a few small names)!

I love it when Danielle Lott comes in the office for her music meetings. She lights up the room with her smile and she’s very approachable; not something you can say about many people in the record industry.

These positions are lead by males in most companies and when you come across a woman who works in this field, you’re expecting someone who’s either ditsy-dumb or a b*tch if I can be blunt. Not Danielle!

Oh, she’s about her business so don’t get it twisted! However-comma, you can’t help but lend her your ear and time to hear what and who she’s pushing at the time.

The music you hear on the radio, internet, and satellite come from record companies and representatives who travel across the country, meeting with program and music directors, convincing them to give their artist a shot at some radio time.

When you hear these local cats brag and boast about radio not showing them love, it’s not that at all! These artists aren’t doing it right!

ThisRadioChickRocks alum like Monique Cary, Neke Howse, and Talya Floyd have all experienced the other side of the coin when it comes to how this game is played!

Pay attention and learn!

Danielle Lott 7

Where are you from?

I’m from Philly but I grew up in South Jersey for a while as well.  I’ve lived in LA, FL, and NY as well and I attended Howard University and I have lived in the DC/Maryland area for over 14 years.  I love it here.

How long have you been in the record industry?

I grew up around the music industry because both of my parents were in the business but I have been in the industry for close to 20 years. My Dad had me working records for him @ WHUR when I was in college. So I got my feet wet then.

What is your professional title and what does that stand for?

I am the Urban Regional Promotion Manager of the Mid-Atlantic & North Carolina @ Republic Records/Universal Records.

Is this a difficult job? Why?

No, it’s not difficult.  I am super passionate about music and I am doing what I love, so this career is a blessing for me.  It can be a bit challenging at times.  Especially when trying to break a new artist or a new single at radio but challenges are good.  They keep me on my toes.

What genre of music do you like to listen to the most and why?

Hmmmm…That’s hard because I listen to EVERYTHING…Jazz, R&B, Reggae, Pop, 80’s, Hip Hop, Alternative, etc.    I guess it depends on the day and my mood.    I would say I probably listen to Classic Hip-hop and R&B the most because the music just feels so good!

Danielle Lott 2 (Danielle w/ Dion Summers, Nelly and friend)

What is your LET IT GO song?  (one that you would absolutely lose your mind listening to)

Man…that is so hard!!! I love so many songs!!!   Well if I have to narrow it down, I have a few…Michael Jackson “I Can’t Help It”, Stevie Wonder “As”, Slick Rick “Mona Lisa” and A Tribe Called Quest “Scenario”.

You’ve met lot of celebrities, was there ever a time you had an uncomfortable encounter where it went terribly wrong? Describe.

Nothing major.  Most have been great.  I have had a couple artists (currently no longer on the label) who have been ridiculously late or felt like they shouldn’t have to do radio but that’s few and far between.

Danielle Lott 1 (Danielle and artist Adrian Marcel)

Who was the best celebrity encounter and why?  Michael Jackson!!!  Why?? Well, because he was nice, friendly, talented and because he’s MICHAEL  JACKSON!!!! I loved him and still do!   I think my 2nd to Michael was Stevie Wonder.  He’s very nice…he’s a Music God.  (bows down)

What’s the biggest misconception about you?

The biggest misconception is that I am arrogant & unapproachable.  I try to be humble and to treat everyone as I would like to be treated.  My Dad instilled that in me at a young age.

Danielle Lott 5

What is the hardest part of your job?

I really honestly don’t think there is anything “hard” per se.  It’s more let’s say…challenging.   I’m rough on myself sometimes because I want to get all of the songs that we are promoting in rotation on all of my radio stations.  Sometimes it happens and sometimes it does not.

Is it hard to convince radio stations to play your label’s record?

Once again, not hard but can be challenging.  It depends on the artist & the single to be honest …for the most part Drake, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj are not usually difficult as whole but I have had some Nicki or Lil Wayne records that I have really had buckle down and  work.  Just because it’s a big artist doesn’t mean that it’s an automatic hit either.  I have to stay persistent and to keep supplying my programmers with new stats & info. I do that with any single we are working though… new artist or established artist.

Why is it difficult for local artists to get signed? What are they missing?

I think there are some talented artists out there and some just average artists.  You have to really be dedicated to putting the work in to be successful and you have to have tough skin.

Have you ever been approached on the street from someone who wanted to be signed?

Yes.   I get artists who want to be signed pretty often.   I try to be as honest and helpful as possible. I’m not an A&R… I’m in Radio promotion but I try to give helpful advice.

Danielle Lott 6 (Danielle w/ Kelson, PD for WIZF in Cincinnati, OH)

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you?  Best advice is to always maintain my integrity and my character, to treat everyone like I want to be treated and to ALWAYS do my best.

Best artist and worst artist you ever had to represent and why?

I honestly can’t think of any that I didn’t like representing.  I had the honor of working with the legendary O’Jays on a project…they were amazing & so professional.  Melanie Fiona is a favorite as well. Drake is very sweet.

What’s the biggest misconception about women in your line of work?

The biggest misconception is that we are not as intelligent or powerful as our male counterparts.  That couldn’t be further than the truth.  There are so many strong women in the music industry and in radio that I look up to.

Where do you see urban music in the next 10-15 years?

Hmmm…I’m hoping the quality/content of music as a whole gets better.  There is some really great quality music out there now but there is definitely some subpar music as well.  I guess that has always been the case though.

Danielle Lott 8

Who do you think is the most underappreciated artist out there right now?

Common, Melanie Fiona, Raphael Saadiq, Raheem Devaughn, The Roots,  Jazmine Sullivan.  They are all so amazingly talented and don’t always get recognized to the degree that they should.

What you really don’t know about me is….. (fill in the blank)

I do not take myself too serious…I like to laugh, have fun and really enjoy life. I’m adventurous…I like to try new things.  My friend Sherri and I have a bucket list where we try new things all the time.

What do you want your legacy to be?

I want my legacy to be that I made a positive contribution to the music industry & that I helped others.

Danielle Lott 3

Biggest regret is…. (fill in the blank)

This isn’t anything major.  I don’t have many regrets.  But one is that I didn’t learn to DJ when I was younger…I lovvvve music.   I know it’s never too late so that is on my “things to do”  list.

ONE WORD/PHRASE THAT SCARES THE BA-JESUS out of you! “I Can’t”

So, I’m in the studio, doing what I do, and in walks Doni Glover. He hosts a show on our sister station, WOLB and he’s accompanied by this beautiful woman who I had never seen before.

He says, “I’m sorry to bother you but I wanted to introduce you to this young lady. Her name is Maimouna Youssef. She’s a singer and she’s amazing.” She had a few CD’s with her and I asked for her information because I wanted to know how I could get her to speak at a domestic violence event I’m hosting with my sorority. She was really nice and I’m glad we exchanged info.

One night, I looked over and saw her CD and I put it in. WOW! This girl is A-Freakin-Mazing! She goes by the stage name MuMu Fresh and she’s toured with Common and Queen Latifah and so many other big name performers; but you’ll read more about that in her one-on-one.

It wasn’t the fact that she could drop names as to who she’s collaborated with that made me want to feature her on ThisRadioChickRocks. It was her talent and her spirit that made me want to use this outlet to introduce her to you.

If you’ve never heard of MuMu Fresh, well, you’re missing out! She’s a beautifully talented young woman and she’s going places!

MuMuFresh 5

Where are you from?

I  was born in Baltimore, grew up between Baltimore, Virginia and DC.

How long have you been singing?

I’ve been singing on stages since I was 5 years old

What genre of music do you really like to listen to the most and why?

I listen to all types of music. My playlist may go from Heavy 60’s & 70’s Soul to, contemporary Alternative Rock , to Krishna conscious chanting songs in a matter of minutes. For example the last three artists that played on my ipod this morning were John Mayer, Big Krit, and James Brown. But out of everything Hip Hop is probably the genre I listen to the most.

MuMuFresh 2

What is your LET IT GO song? (one that you would absolutely lose your mind listening to)

My “let it go” song changes… My “let it go” song for a while, when it first came out, was “Sorry” by T.I. and Andre 3000. Andre is definitely my favorite MC and he murdered that song. I had to have listened to it over a hundred times.

Before that it was “Ital” by Lupe Fiasco.  For a while it was A.D.H.D. by Kendrick Lamar and Trophies by Drake, Otis by Kanye & Jay. But my “let it go’ song of all time maybe be “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince

You’ve worked with lots of singers, songwriters, producers in your career. Was there ever a time you had an uncomfortable experience where it went terribly wrong? Describe.

My very first time recording something for a national artist was when I was 18 years old. I was recording a chorus for Pete Rock and C L Smooth and I just froze up in the studio. I wasn’t used to recording and I didn’t know how to manipulate my voice in order to stack vocals properly and really produce the necessary vocal texture for the track. So they ended up not using what I recorded and I was really disappointed in myself. It was a great lesson though because in the long run, it made me work harder in the studio to learn the art of recording and today I’m able to do things in the booth that I had no idea how to do then.

Who was the best celebrity encounter and why?

I’ve had so many great ones but the best celebrity encounter was probably with Lauryn Hill first, backstage at The Dave Chapelle’s Block Party when I performed with Dead Prez and then again at The Kennedy Center in DC when I opened up for her through Black Girl’s Rock’s “Rock Like A Girl” Concert hosted by MC Lyte.

But I have to include that most recently while I was on tour with Common for the “Nobodysmiling” tour, I got to rock with Queen Latifah and perform “U.N.I.T.Y” with her. The experience was absolutely incredible and then Raekwon the Chef had me super hype when he came on stage with us and started spitting his verse to C.R.E.A.M. , (I just lost it. I’m a big Wu Tang fan) And I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that D’angelo had me in absolute tears, watching him play and sing when we toured with him in Australia this year. It’s so hard to say but these were all moments that I will never forget.

What’s the biggest misconception about MuMu?

The biggest misconception about me is that I’m really serious and unapproachable.  Maybe its because I am confident and I often talk about serious issues concerning my community and I have some amount of celebrity status, so people tend to think I am very serious and unapproachable as a person or they expect me to be standoffish before they even meet me.  People are constantly surprised at how approachable, silly and down to earth I am.  I love to laugh, I always cracking jokes, acting silly, and finding any reason to make light of something.  I hate drama and I love to see people and situations work together for everyone’s greater good.

MuMuFresh 7

What genre of music would you say doesn’t get the most credit?

Jazz doesn’t get enough credit for how much it has influenced some many other genres.

What are your thoughts about independent artists and nationally recognized artists?

I’m glad that both exist.  The music scene is better because of the diversity that both Indie and Major label recording artists provide. Indie music was born out of the sentiment of not taking “NO” for an answer. Indie music was born out of rebellion and a need for self-autonomy.  If there were no Indie artists, big business corporations would have a monopoly on the music and would suppress free speech and creative authenticity. But even with that being said, Indie artists still can learn a lot from the mistakes and successes of the major label recording artists just as major label recording artists have been learning a lot from Indie artists about how to be more hands on with their business practices, more accessible to their audiences through social media and grass roots marketing approaches, and about how to be authentic and true to their artistic integrity in order to create more meaningful music.

Do programs like YouTube, and Spodify give artists a bad name or a greater advantage of being recognized?

Programs like youtube, Pandora, and spotify definitely give Indie artists an advantage because it allows music lovers worldwide to discover us without major label marketing, promotion or distribution.  Some of these programs also allow us to receive residual online income when they play our songs and great organizations like sound exchange collect them for us monthly. Major label artists may sell more records but at the end of the day may still end up taking home the same amount of net earnings as an Indie artist who doesn’t have so much label debt to pay off.
What was the best advice anyone ever gave you?

Be consistent, professional, on-time, and true to yourself and your life’s purpose

MuMu Fresh 3

What’s the biggest misconception about women in this industry?

The biggest misconception about women in the industry is that we are victims. Women in general are powerful beyond measure and when we believe in our power we can accomplish anything. We don’t have to play this man’s game as much as we believe that we do.  No man made me, so no man can break me, I’m property of the Divine Mother Goddess.

A great poet once said, “I Don’t Have to Lie Or Lay to get what’s for me anyway” – Raquel Ra Brown
What do you think is wrong, if you do, with hip hop and R&B?

What’s wrong with Hip hop and R&B is that these industries are not being run by real musicians or real art appreciators anymore.  In fact, these markets are run by individuals and companies who do not care about the future of Black and Brown people or any people living in urban environments who consume this music as food. Mainstream Hip-hop and R&B is no longer authentic or pro-life and it is poisoning the people who consume it.
MuMuFresh 6

You’ve performed with Common and Queen Latifah. Who would you want to collaborate a song with and/or tour with?

I would love to collaborate with Andre 3000, Raphael Saadiq, Kendrick Lamar, and D’Angelo
What was the funniest thing that happened to you while on tour or during your singing career?

Probably tripping over a cable onstage and falling over a monitor and then trying to make a sexy roll up and come back move. It was hilarious! I kept singing though. That’s the reason I always take the lenses out of all of my glasses and just where the frames onstage. The band laughed about that fall for the longest time after that.
MuMuFresh 3

Who do you think is the most underappreciated artist out there right now?

I’d say Ledisi may be the most amazing and unappreciated vocalist out there now
Who’s in your iPod/radar?

The music I most recently added to my Ipod is Mali Music, The New D’angelo Black Messiah, Kendrick Lamar, Big Krit, Alice Smith, Gregory Porter & Common.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years, 1) I envision myself having completed and released 2-3 more critically acclaimed albums that I really feel proud of creatively. 2) I’m really excited about building up my youth artist development company.  3) Before 5 year’s time, I would like to be in a position to sponsor my own company’s world promo tours 4) I’d love to delve into acting. 5) And lastly before 5 year’s time, I plan to complete my first screen play to become a feature film

MuMu Fresh 4

If singing wasn’t your “thing”, what else would you be doing? If I weren’t a singer, I’d be a filmmaker
What do you want your legacy to be? My legacy will be continually promoting and perpetuating Black Excellence

What’s your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure is sleep. I love love love to sleep. I hate to stay up past 10pm ever and that’s so unusual for an artist. I’m an old lady at heart

She’s the chick you HAVE to talk to when you want to talk to the boss! She’s the chick the boss refers you to when he doesn’t want to talk to you. She’s powerful, she’s insightful, intelligent, and extremely powerful (wait, I said that already, didn’t I?)

Her name is Mugure Crawford. What’s that? You’ve never heard of her? I’m sure you haven’t but know that Mugure is that CHICK to get to know; especially in the radio industry.

She works side by side to Radio One VP of Programming Mr. Jay Stevens and many other top execs at the company.

Crawford wrestles with big deals, celebrity interviews, and major contracts that you wouldn’t know anything about because you’re looking from the other end.

But where are my manners? Let me introduce you to the “Make It Happen Mogul Mommy”, Mugure Crawford:

Profile 2 (1)

Where are you from?

Hyattsville, Md in Prince George’s County, Md

How long have you been in the radio business?

14 years

What don’t people know about you?

I am of Kenyan descent. Both my parents come from Kenya in East Africa. This is also where my  first & maiden name comes from.

50 cent (Mugure w/ 50 Cent)

What genre of music do you like to listen to the most and why?

Pop/Rhythmic because it’s easy to sing along to, learn the words, feels good, dance to,& more importantly I can play in front of my children.

What is your LET IT GO song? (one that you would absolutely lose your mind listening to)

“Rather Be” by Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynn (it’s the Coca Cola commercial) & I dedicate that to my daughter

Daley Mugure (1) (Mugure w/ Daley)

You’ve met lot of celebrities, was there ever a time you had an uncomfortable celebrity encounter/interview where it went terribly wrong? Describe.

None that I would say uncomfortable in a bad way but a few that just by the way they look at you can leave u speechless or uncomfortable in a good way….ladies u feel me *winks*

Who was the best celebrity encounter and why?

50 cent because I spent almost 2 hours with him &:he shared so many great stories, answered questions  all the while discussing music & business. Rico Love is wonderful to vibe with on music & life in general. And being in the studio with Frank Ocean for Channel Orange listening preview will truly be an unforgettable experience.

Mugure Mary (Mugure w/ Mary J. Blige)

What’s the biggest misconception about MUGURE?

That I’m younger than I really I’m. That I’m always happy. That my life is perfect. That my life is easy. That I haven’t struggled or worked hard or earned everything that I have.

What don’t people SEE about MUGURE?

My sadness, frustrations, vast knowledge & experience w/ radio & the music industry. How hard it is to walk in my shoes sums it up…

What don’t people get about music when it comes to radio?

That even major artists can’t get airplay on radio, so as an independent or unsigned artist what makes you so special or entitled? Nowadays it’s about timing & having your music or movement showcased so that Radio finds you.

Mugure Thea (Mugure w/ Thea Mitchem)

Who do you most admire in the radio industry and why?

Thea Mitchem: simply because she’s built her career remaining true to herself. Ultimately her passion for radio & the music has taken her places far beyond her expectations. She has a resilient spirit & as a woman in our business, that’s a necessity to survive. Besides, why would I follow someone who hasn’t been where I’m trying to Go? I know you asked for one person, but I’ve been blessed to work with so many phenomenal women in Radio .

From Cynthia Bullock, Michel Wright, Terri Thomas, to Karen Vaughn, Tanita Myers & Cortney Hicks.

I would be remiss if I did not mention Neke Howse. I value her drive, ambition, & tenacity. She has seen it all in the radio business. Her resume speaks volumes. From a top on air talent in some of the biggest markets to also an experienced Programmer. She is truly an “Unsung” she-ro in our industry & I’m forever grateful for her wisdom. She leads by example. She is truly passionate about music, the business; a fearless woman who lives the culture.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you?

Stay Clear of the Drama. Focus on You!

20140926_182146-MIX

What’s the biggest misconception about women in radio?

We don’t take direction

Where do you see urban radio in the next 10-15 years?

Mixed in with more popular music genres of all kinds.  I think it will be a result in a shift of the consumer.  Hopefully urban radio gets back to programming  a culture and not just a format per say. Let’s get excited about the music again and in turn, draw the listener back longer to listening; which will spin out new ideas and content, thus evolving the urban radio industry .

Bevy Smith (Mugure w/ Bevy Smith)

What do you think is wrong, if you do, with hip hop and R&B?

Not enough creativity in lyrics and not enough time focused on artist development. Plus, if you are creative with sustenance, you’re not supported. Its problems on all sides of the spectrum.  And why do we feature the same artists on every record?

Who do you think is the most under-appreciated artist out there right now? Daley

Tinashe (Mugure with Tinasche)

Who’s in your iPod/radar?

Hip Hop artists Childish Gambino, Logic; J. Cole, LeCrae, Inspirational Artist Travis Greene, Tasha Page Lockhart, Kiera Sheard, (Pop& R&B) Taylor Swift; Mary J. Blige; Ariana Grande; Sam Smith; K. Michelle; Teyana Taylor, Tinashe, Mr. Probz, Mary Lambert, Jessie J, Meghan Trainor, Nick Jonas, & Morgan James! (I listen to EVERYTHING!!! MUSIC FUELS MY SOUL!)

What do you want your legacy to be?

That you can still find a way to pursue your dreams and career goals without compromising your personal and family goals

Summer Family Vignette PicturePicsArt_1418354180878

Biggest regret is…

Not cussing out certain people deserving of it (usually no Grey area w/An Aries); Not having a bigger family or starting my family by the age of at least 25.

If you could trade your life for any celebrity, who would it be and why?

(funny question)  Joan Rivers because she got to cuss out or talk bad about a lot of people and everyone thought it was funny. Remember, there is always a lot of truth in a little humor! LOL

Civ Jones is a part of the Radio One family and that’s how we met. She’s a woman whi never seasons her words; you get it straight from the hip! She’s curious about a lot of things and never hesitates to ask questions.

I like Civ because, in my opinion, she has such a free spirit and she’s a chick that simply wants to win; the right way.

You can hear her most weekends on Magic 95.9 (Baltimore). Also, you can see her hosting or performing at local open mic night or cultural/hip hop music events.

She’s adventurous and I’m not sure if it’s because she’s in the Army Reserve or maybe it’s because she was born that way.

I’m glad she decided to grant me this one on one, because not only does it give you the opportunity to get to know her, but I wouldn’t mind learning a bit more about Miss Civ Jones myself!

Civ Jones 7

How long have you been in the radio business?

13 years

Who helped you get your start in radio?

God lead me to various people who encouraged me to stay the course. I do have to thank WOLB’s Larry Young though. He reached out to me to be a host for his Shero segment several years ago. That platform opened up many doors for me in radio and for that, I’m forever grateful.  However my start comes from sheer determination, drive and having the mindset that failure was not an option.

Are females harder to get along with in radio?

Not at all. Of course there are various types of women that you come across that have those walls up and make hard for someone else to get along with them. I try not to take it personal though. Especially when I know it has nothing to do with me.

Civ Jones 2

Do you think it’s a lot of competition?

I believe there’s hidden competition. Meaning, its not really in your face but its there. Most of the time you don’t notice it until your manager pulls you in the office because someone told on you about your outside activities. (snakes in the grass)

What is your LET IT GO song? (one that you would absolutely lose your mind listening to)

When I’m exercising, Beyonce’s “711”  its on constant repeat.  When I need to get over someone, Lil Kim’s entire “Hardcore” album and when I’m feeling good about life Twinkie Clark ‘Endow Me”.

You interviewed a lot of celebrities. Was there ever a time you had an uncomfortable celebrity interview and it went terribly wrong? Describe.

Charlie Murphy is was so damn serious. It was an intense situation I felt like I was interviewing his character MC Gusto from CB4.

Civ Jones6

Who was the best celebrity encounter and why?

When I interviewed TGT (Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank) and hosted their meet and greet. That was a moment in my life that I had realized that I had accomplished my dream. I had grown up listening to these guys then there I was interviewing them. It was surreal.

What’s the biggest misconception about you?

That I’m so hardcore but I’m really a delicate flower that cares a lot about people.

What don’t people get about music when it comes to radio?

For artists, that it’s a 99% chance that their music will never be played on radio.

Civ Jones 8

Who do you most admire in the radio industry and why?

I really like Wendy Williams. She is un-apologetically herself.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you?

“The squeaky wheel gets the oil”. Basically make noise, ask questions and speak your concerns for what you want.

Civ Jones 1

If given the chance, I’ve alays wanted to try: (fill in the blank)

Jumping from a diving board.

What’s the biggest misconception about women in radio?

That we don’t work hard or we’re not needed.

Where do you see urban radio in the next 10-15 years?

Gone if doesn’t get back in tune with the people.

Civ Jones 3

What do you think is wrong, if you do, with hip hop and R&B?

The people who created it (black people) do not own it. We don’t own the record companies that produce it or the media outlets that play it. Also there is a lack of balance among the type of music that is allowed to come out.

Who do you think is the most under appreciated artist out there right now?

The ones that are actually saying something

Civ Jones 4 (Civ Jones and Comedian Katt Willams)

Who’s in your iPod/radar?

Greenspan, Eze Jackson and Kissi B musically are doing it for me right now. I listen to more unsigned local artist then I do national ones.

What do you want your legacy to be?

I want the seeds that I have planted to be felt, heard and seen. I want to leave behind a something that has helped people.

Civ Jones 5 (Civ Jones and singer Raheem DeVaughn)

Biggest regret is….

Staying in a place/situation or being around people too long when I knew that the season was up.

How can people reach out to you?
