Here’s my story: I’m on the red carpet at the BET Honors and in a small, cold room, filled with shouting people and flashing lights. The men were in suits and tuxedos and the women were snatched and beat to the Gods! In the room, there’s this beautiful woman standing on the “media” row of a few people next to me. I had noticed her before when our group  walked from the hotel to the media room, but for some strange reason, I couldn’t figure out who she was. She was in a gorgeous black gown, hair in a ponytail, her make up was flawless and her smile was radiant; the one feature that seemed familiar. First thing I thought was “I think I’m under dressed.” (lol)

You know how you stare at someone, trying to figure out where you know them from but just can’t put a finger on it? I proceeded to do my interviews and she was busy doing hers. Funny thing about this woman though, the celebrities that stopped through our line, gave this woman extra time. Again, I’m thinking “who is this chick?” I’m sure she caught me staring at her!

About an hour had passed and the celebrity flow began to minimize; leaving only assistants and interns. The “media peeps” started to clear the room and a few of us “radio chicks” decided to take a group picture. The “mystery woman” in the ball gown was busy talking, laughing, and minding her business while we were busy snapping our cheesy red carpet selfies.

I couldn’t ignore it any longer. I had to introduce myself. I wasn’t sure if she knew who I was, but when she introduced herself, my jaw dropped! This beautifully, talented woman I had been standing next to all that time was the legendary Angela Stribling! (selfie time!!!)

FullSizeRender (Miss Angela & I at the BET Honors, 2013)

She’s the woman with the golden voice and memorable tagline “I’m Angela Stribling.” She was one of the big names from the BET line up from the 90’s like Bev Smith and Donnie Simpson, on shows like Video Soul, Screen Scene, Planet Groove, and more!

I was super psyched to finally meet the woman I used to watch on television, mimicking her voice and pretending to host the evening news in the mirror (don’t judge me).

From the BET Honors red carpet to Twittersphere, Miss Angela and I had developed a virtual sisterhood; in 140 characters or less! It’s truly an honor to have had the opportunity to dig in the crates of her history. I’ve learned so much! Talk about a name dropper! Read more on Miss Angela Stribling and consider yourself schooled by a true television and radio legend!

How long have you been in the radio business? Over 20 years.

How long were you in the television business? Since 1990

What is more enjoyable/different? I love them both. People are so visual. So it’s amazing how many people can remember what I had on, or how I wore my hair, before they remember the actual content. It’s just funny. I’m having so much fun with it, because even though I can’t see them, I know my audience is right there with me.

Is the transition from television to radio a challenging one? Not really, but, the mediums are completely different. The difference in television is the script/teleprompter. But, I found a way to inject my creativity and personality! I really enjoy interviewing people, and getting them to relax and tell me everything makes it all worthwhile! I’d say that honestly connecting with people is my greatest strength!

Angela stribling 2

What was it about radio that struck your interest? In radio, you get a chance to create whatever world you want to. Since there are no visuals, you have to help your audience feel the vibe you’re going for. The music is the star! My goal is to make my listeners forget their troubles and fall even deeper in love with their fav artists. I’ll inject a little humor and/or inspiration along the way too.

What genre of music do you like to listen to the most and why? I listen to a lot of different genres. But, Jazz is my absolute favorite. I fell in love with jazz at a very young age. When I first heard Sarah Vaughan sing, I was mesmerized. Then, I discovered Ahmad Jamal, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, all the masters. I’ve been hooked ever since. But, I also love R & B. I listen to WHUR even when I’m not working there.

What is your LET IT GO song? (one that you would absolutely lose your mind listening to) Lately, it’s Jennifer Hudson and R Kelly’s “It’s Your World!” I can’t get enough of it! Wait, I’m gonna put that on right now! 😉

angela stribling 3

You’ve interviewed a lot of celebrities, was there ever a time you had an uncomfortable celebrity encounter/interview where it went terribly wrong? Describe.

Hah!!! Well, you’re right! I’ve covered lots of people and have many funny stories. I’d have to say the most embarrassing was when I wanted to interview Chaka Khan at the Cincinnati Music Festival a few years back. My producer wanted just a quick interview with the major artists. It was before 2005 because Luther was there…Chaka, Gladys, etc… Okay so when Chaka was finished performing, my producer informed me that she was in a big rush so, the camera guy will meet us at Chaka’s trailer. He said I’ll meet you there too… just get me anything you can get. A short interview about her performing here, anything!

So, okay! I rushed to her trailer (practically ran) and was met by her British assistant, Wanda. Wanda told me that she will do her best to get me that quick interview with Chaka…but, it will have to be very quick because she had a plane to catch. No problem. I waited patiently for the beautiful Chaka Khan to come from her dressing room… She came out, and thankfully remembered me from previous interviews. I said “I know you’re rushing, but all we need is a quick line or two about you performing here at the Cincinnati Music Festival ok?” (My camera guy arrived before I did and was set up) She said: “Angela, you know I’ll do an interview with you, but I’m in such a rush. I have a plane to catch. I’m sorry.

But, talk to Wanda and have her check my “shedule” and I’d be happy to do it.” I looked at her …as if I was being punked… I thought she was joking… I started laughing and I said “Wait, did you say “shedule?” Bwahahahaha!!!” I thought she was saying that to get me to laugh, but… She wasn’t laughing. She said very slowly… “Yes, she’ll check my “shedule” to see when I can do it.” Now, you know when something is so funny to you…(even if it’s only you)… and you are not supposed to laugh… Which means you can’t stop laughing? Unfortunately, this was one of those times. I could not stop laughing. I was thinking  “Isn’t she from Detroit?” Jesus, help me! But, as I later thought about it, I do know how it is. Her assistant is British, and they spend a lot of time together. Musicians have this issue. Especially, because they have such good ears… They don’t even realize their speaking like whoever has the accent. Yes that all makes sense now…

But, at the time, it didn’t stop me from laughing. Her reaction? She just walked off with Wanda and the rest of her entourage. I was standing there laughing… but it was sobering when she walked off. Well, the only consolation is that the producer was laughing too. Actually, he was in tears. I felt soooo bad. Okay, fast forward about one month later…when I was to bring her on stage in St. Lucia. I prayed that she’d forgotten about the laughing fiasco, but honestly wasn’t sure whether or not I was going to get beaten up backstage. o-O  But, Ms. Chaka Khan was very sweet. Love her!  😉

Who was the best celebrity encounter and why? I’d have to say the best celebrity encounter was interviewing Stevie Wonder. Why?: Because he’s Stevie Wonder. He’s such a kind, generous, genuine spirit. I wasn’t expecting his sense of humor. He’s so funny. Which is completely disarming when you’re around such greatness! I’m proud to call him a close friend.

What’s the biggest misconception about you? I’m not sure. But many people tell me that after having a conversation with me, they were surprised at how “down to earth” I am. So, maybe the misconception is that I’m not. When I dug a little deeper as to why some people even thought that I wasn’t, it all came down to the way I speak. They thought I spoke a certain way for the cameras and mics. I’m just me all the time. 😉

What don’t people get about music when it comes to radio? I think people don’t get how powerful radio is. So, we have to be responsible with what we choose to play. People have so many choices of where they listen to music these days. So, we cherish our listeners. We’re exposing our audiences to the very best that we can get.

angela stribling 5

Who do you most admire in the radio industry and why? Two people actually. The General Manager of WHUR, Jim Watkins, is such a genius and visionary. He’s that type of manager who gives you insightful direction, then room to soar! His generosity is probably what inspires me the most. Jim takes mentoring and giving students a chance to develop and grow, very seriously. I’m also very inspired by Cathy Hughes! She is a true maverick and gave me my start in the radio industry. I’ve witnessed how her steadfast focus on her goal, garnered her so much success. A true trailblazer. I won’t say that she’s an inspiration just because she’s a woman! She’s someone we can all take a lesson from.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? Cathy Hughes told me a long time ago to own something some day. I’ve been a successful voiceover artist for a long time, so, it made sense for me to start my own production company. Thank you Cathy!

What’s the biggest misconception about women in radio? I think the perception is that we are staunch rivals and competitors. My experience is the complete opposite. Take us, for instance KiKi. I’ve got so much love for you…and you always make me feel genuinely appreciated for my contributions to the broadcast industry. Thank you, by the way! 😉 In my world, women support and celebrate each other! I believe there are many of us in the sisterhood!

Where do you see urban radio in the next 10-15 years? So many people say Ooooo! Terrestrial radio is dying and everyone will listen to music on their smartphones and the internet. There’s nothing wrong with having many choices. But, I believe radio is here for a long time. I can’t imagine life without it!  Yes, it’s constantly changing and growing. But, that’s a good thing.

angela stribling 6

Who do you think is the most under-appreciated artist out there right now? Will Downing! He’s so incredible… But it seems that he rarely gets real love from radio. I’ve never been able to figure that out. He’s so talented! Maysa is another one. She was just nominated for a Grammy… and Still doesn’t get much love from radio.

Who’s in your iPod/radar? Stevie Wonder, Gregory Porter, Ahmad Jamal, Marcus Miller, Minnie Riperton, Leela James, Avery Sunshine, Will Downing, Maysa, Syleena Johnson, Buika,

What do you want your legacy to be? That’s a big question. I want to inspire people to be there best!  We’ve got the tools for greatness, but it’s usually fear that holds us back. It’s a constant lesson, but it’s worth it to work on every day. So, by living my life, fully, and authentically, I wish to encourage others to do the same. Follow your bliss!

Biggest regret is… I’d love to say that I have no regrets. But, I do! Well, I’ll just say, there was that one who got away!

If you could be one of these, who would it be and why?

Kardashian sisters -Kim! Such a slave to fashion!

Girlfriends (cast) – “Joan” played by Tracee Ellis Ross

Female Super hero –Unfortunately, there aren’t many. So, a version of CatWoman! A sweet kitty by nature, but will battle when necessary!

Sex In The City girls- Oh! I’m so Carrie. She’s a girl who is living her dream career, her girlfriends are her lifeline, and she is passionate about that fairy tale happy ending with her man!

She’s the chick you HAVE to talk to when you want to talk to the boss! She’s the chick the boss refers you to when he doesn’t want to talk to you. She’s powerful, she’s insightful, intelligent, and extremely powerful (wait, I said that already, didn’t I?)

Her name is Mugure Crawford. What’s that? You’ve never heard of her? I’m sure you haven’t but know that Mugure is that CHICK to get to know; especially in the radio industry.

She works side by side to Radio One VP of Programming Mr. Jay Stevens and many other top execs at the company.

Crawford wrestles with big deals, celebrity interviews, and major contracts that you wouldn’t know anything about because you’re looking from the other end.

But where are my manners? Let me introduce you to the “Make It Happen Mogul Mommy”, Mugure Crawford:

Profile 2 (1)

Where are you from?

Hyattsville, Md in Prince George’s County, Md

How long have you been in the radio business?

14 years

What don’t people know about you?

I am of Kenyan descent. Both my parents come from Kenya in East Africa. This is also where my  first & maiden name comes from.

50 cent (Mugure w/ 50 Cent)

What genre of music do you like to listen to the most and why?

Pop/Rhythmic because it’s easy to sing along to, learn the words, feels good, dance to,& more importantly I can play in front of my children.

What is your LET IT GO song? (one that you would absolutely lose your mind listening to)

“Rather Be” by Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynn (it’s the Coca Cola commercial) & I dedicate that to my daughter

Daley Mugure (1) (Mugure w/ Daley)

You’ve met lot of celebrities, was there ever a time you had an uncomfortable celebrity encounter/interview where it went terribly wrong? Describe.

None that I would say uncomfortable in a bad way but a few that just by the way they look at you can leave u speechless or uncomfortable in a good way….ladies u feel me *winks*

Who was the best celebrity encounter and why?

50 cent because I spent almost 2 hours with him &:he shared so many great stories, answered questions  all the while discussing music & business. Rico Love is wonderful to vibe with on music & life in general. And being in the studio with Frank Ocean for Channel Orange listening preview will truly be an unforgettable experience.

Mugure Mary (Mugure w/ Mary J. Blige)

What’s the biggest misconception about MUGURE?

That I’m younger than I really I’m. That I’m always happy. That my life is perfect. That my life is easy. That I haven’t struggled or worked hard or earned everything that I have.

What don’t people SEE about MUGURE?

My sadness, frustrations, vast knowledge & experience w/ radio & the music industry. How hard it is to walk in my shoes sums it up…

What don’t people get about music when it comes to radio?

That even major artists can’t get airplay on radio, so as an independent or unsigned artist what makes you so special or entitled? Nowadays it’s about timing & having your music or movement showcased so that Radio finds you.

Mugure Thea (Mugure w/ Thea Mitchem)

Who do you most admire in the radio industry and why?

Thea Mitchem: simply because she’s built her career remaining true to herself. Ultimately her passion for radio & the music has taken her places far beyond her expectations. She has a resilient spirit & as a woman in our business, that’s a necessity to survive. Besides, why would I follow someone who hasn’t been where I’m trying to Go? I know you asked for one person, but I’ve been blessed to work with so many phenomenal women in Radio .

From Cynthia Bullock, Michel Wright, Terri Thomas, to Karen Vaughn, Tanita Myers & Cortney Hicks.

I would be remiss if I did not mention Neke Howse. I value her drive, ambition, & tenacity. She has seen it all in the radio business. Her resume speaks volumes. From a top on air talent in some of the biggest markets to also an experienced Programmer. She is truly an “Unsung” she-ro in our industry & I’m forever grateful for her wisdom. She leads by example. She is truly passionate about music, the business; a fearless woman who lives the culture.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you?

Stay Clear of the Drama. Focus on You!

20140926_182146-MIX

What’s the biggest misconception about women in radio?

We don’t take direction

Where do you see urban radio in the next 10-15 years?

Mixed in with more popular music genres of all kinds.  I think it will be a result in a shift of the consumer.  Hopefully urban radio gets back to programming  a culture and not just a format per say. Let’s get excited about the music again and in turn, draw the listener back longer to listening; which will spin out new ideas and content, thus evolving the urban radio industry .

Bevy Smith (Mugure w/ Bevy Smith)

What do you think is wrong, if you do, with hip hop and R&B?

Not enough creativity in lyrics and not enough time focused on artist development. Plus, if you are creative with sustenance, you’re not supported. Its problems on all sides of the spectrum.  And why do we feature the same artists on every record?

Who do you think is the most under-appreciated artist out there right now? Daley

Tinashe (Mugure with Tinasche)

Who’s in your iPod/radar?

Hip Hop artists Childish Gambino, Logic; J. Cole, LeCrae, Inspirational Artist Travis Greene, Tasha Page Lockhart, Kiera Sheard, (Pop& R&B) Taylor Swift; Mary J. Blige; Ariana Grande; Sam Smith; K. Michelle; Teyana Taylor, Tinashe, Mr. Probz, Mary Lambert, Jessie J, Meghan Trainor, Nick Jonas, & Morgan James! (I listen to EVERYTHING!!! MUSIC FUELS MY SOUL!)

What do you want your legacy to be?

That you can still find a way to pursue your dreams and career goals without compromising your personal and family goals

Summer Family Vignette PicturePicsArt_1418354180878

Biggest regret is…

Not cussing out certain people deserving of it (usually no Grey area w/An Aries); Not having a bigger family or starting my family by the age of at least 25.

If you could trade your life for any celebrity, who would it be and why?

(funny question)  Joan Rivers because she got to cuss out or talk bad about a lot of people and everyone thought it was funny. Remember, there is always a lot of truth in a little humor! LOL

Civ Jones is a part of the Radio One family and that’s how we met. She’s a woman whi never seasons her words; you get it straight from the hip! She’s curious about a lot of things and never hesitates to ask questions.

I like Civ because, in my opinion, she has such a free spirit and she’s a chick that simply wants to win; the right way.

You can hear her most weekends on Magic 95.9 (Baltimore). Also, you can see her hosting or performing at local open mic night or cultural/hip hop music events.

She’s adventurous and I’m not sure if it’s because she’s in the Army Reserve or maybe it’s because she was born that way.

I’m glad she decided to grant me this one on one, because not only does it give you the opportunity to get to know her, but I wouldn’t mind learning a bit more…

Civ Jones 7

How long have you been in the radio business?

13 years

Who helped you get your start in radio?

God lead me to various people who encouraged me to stay the course. I do have to thank WOLB’s Larry Young though. He reached out to me to be a host for his Shero segment several years ago. That platform opened up many doors for me in radio and for that, I’m forever grateful.  However my start comes from sheer determination, drive and having the mindset that failure was not an option.

Are females harder to get along with in radio?

Not at all. Of course there are various types of women that you come across that have those walls up and make hard for someone else to get along with them. I try not to take it personal though. Especially when I know it has nothing to do with me.

Civ Jones 2

Do you think it’s a lot of competition?

I believe there’s hidden competition. Meaning, its not really in your face but its there. Most of the time you don’t notice it until your manager pulls you in the office because someone told on you about your outside activities. (snakes in the grass)

What is your LET IT GO song? (one that you would absolutely lose your mind listening to)

When I’m exercising, Beyonce’s “711”  its on constant repeat.  When I need to get over someone, Lil Kim’s entire “Hardcore” album and when I’m feeling good about life Twinkie Clark ‘Endow Me”.

You interviewed a lot of celebrities. Was there ever a time you had an uncomfortable celebrity interview and it went terribly wrong? Describe.

Charlie Murphy is was so damn serious. It was an intense situation I felt like I was interviewing his character MC Gusto from CB4.

Civ Jones6

Who was the best celebrity encounter and why?

When I interviewed TGT (Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank) and hosted their meet and greet. That was a moment in my life that I had realized that I had accomplished my dream. I had grown up listening to these guys then there I was interviewing them. It was surreal.

What’s the biggest misconception about you?

That I’m so hardcore but I’m really a delicate flower that cares a lot about people.

What don’t people get about music when it comes to radio?

For artists, that it’s a 99% chance that their music will never be played on radio.

Civ Jones 8

Who do you most admire in the radio industry and why?

I really like Wendy Williams. She is un-apologetically herself.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you?

“The squeaky wheel gets the oil”. Basically make noise, ask questions and speak your concerns for what you want.

Civ Jones 1

If given the chance, I’ve alays wanted to try: (fill in the blank)

Jumping from a diving board.

What’s the biggest misconception about women in radio?

That we don’t work hard or we’re not needed.

Where do you see urban radio in the next 10-15 years?

Gone if doesn’t get back in tune with the people.

Civ Jones 3

What do you think is wrong, if you do, with hip hop and R&B?

The people who created it (black people) do not own it. We don’t own the record companies that produce it or the media outlets that play it. Also there is a lack of balance among the type of music that is allowed to come out.

Who do you think is the most under appreciated artist out there right now?

The ones that are actually saying something

Civ Jones 4 (Civ Jones and Comedian Katt Willams)

Who’s in your iPod/radar?

Greenspan, Eze Jackson and Kissi B musically are doing it for me right now. I listen to more unsigned local artist then I do national ones.

What do you want your legacy to be?

I want the seeds that I have planted to be felt, heard and seen. I want to leave behind a something that has helped people.

Civ Jones 5 (Civ Jones and singer Raheem DeVaughn)

Biggest regret is….

Staying in a place/situation or being around people too long when I knew that the season was up.

Alicia Cruz is a true #RadioChick! You think you know her as one half of The D.A. (co-hosting w/ Dre Johnson, Saturday’s from 3P to 7P on 92Q) but she’s been a spit-fire in this game for a long time.

I met Alicia Cruz (I can’t really remember) after I started working at Radio One and since then, she and I have bonded like true sisters; talking about our children (she’s a mother of two), our relationships, radio, life, you name it!

She’s funny, honest, creative, smart, talented and nurturing. She loves being in radio but being a wife and mother is what she’s most proud of! One of the reasons why I admire her so much! Read her story to find out more.

It was iiKane who sparked this #RadioChicksRock crusade for me. One day, she and I were talking at my dining room table (taking a break from her wrapping me with Saran Wrap for some weight loss fad) about radio and how we got started.

Learning that her talents came from life lessons, bad teachers, bad decisions, great teachers, great decisions, and more than enough second chances, iiKane is one of the most talented female radio personalities in the business; and there a lot of women in this industry all around the world. If you still don’t know who she is… I mean…like iiKane says “Google me baby!”

iiKane 2

How long have you been in the radio business?  Almost 10 years!

What was it about radio that struck your interest? I used to read the back of cereal boxes at the breakfast table when I was a kid. I was pretending to be the voice-over announcers from the television commercials lol.  I had the opportunity to begin working for some major media companies while I was still a teenager during my undergrad years at Howard University. The rest is history from there!

What genre of music do you like to listen to the most and why?  That’s a hard question. Hip Hop and R&B of course! I listen to a lot of Bossa Nova like Sergio Mendes. Soul. Rock. Reggae. Even some country. I don’t know man that’s a hard question.  Whatever fits the occasion.

What is your LET IT GO song? (one that you would absolutely lose your mind listening to)   Anything Beyoncé!

You’ve interviewed a lot of celebrities, was there ever a time you had an uncomfortable interview where it went terribly wrong? Describe.  You never know how interviews are going to go but the key is to be as comfortable as possible(comfortable with myself and with my guest). Of course, the interview usually flows better when I already have a relationship with my guest but I always try to have fun. A lot of times interviewers run into uncomfortable moments when they try to bombard someone with super personal questions or rumors and it’s tough for guests to open up if they feel like you’re just trying to use them for a “Wendy Williams moment.”

Who was the best celebrity encounter and why?  Meeting Michael Jackson backstage was the only time ever that my mouth hung open for two seconds. I was 18 years old working for Hot97. Highlight of my summer.

What’s the biggest misconception about you?  People always say I look a lot different than how I sound on the radio.  If I had a dime for every time I heard, “Oh my! I thought you were a bigger person!”, “I thought you were older.” or my favorite is, “I thought you were dark-skinned!”  How exactly do you SOUND dark-skinned!  I guess my voice is all about that bass, no treble!

iiKane 5

What don’t people get about music when it comes to radio?  Ummm… there’s levels to this sh*t. lol

Who do you most admire in the radio industry and why?  I admire Howard Stern’s longevity. I admire Wendy Williams’ journey from radio to Hollywood.  I admire Angie Martinez’s Power move.  I admire my partner Konan’s hustle.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you?  The Golden Rule:  Treat everyone with the same level of respect from the janitor to the millionaire celebrity or exec because you never know who you will cross paths with on your way up… or down.

iiKane 7

What’s the biggest misconception about women in radio? They all sound alike and are unattractive. I hear that a lot but I have plenty of gorgeous radio sisters all throughout the U.S.

Where do you see urban radio in the next 10-15 years?  Still here!

iiKane 6

What do you think is wrong, if you do, with hip hop and R&B?  Hip Hop is ever evolving, period. I think as artists, we must own the responsibility to lift people through our music.  That’s something that most mainstream hip hop music lacks.  Many artists flash wealth and good living but don’t rap about ways to spread that good life to other people.  Not using their influence to reach youth on a progressive level.  The hard part is trying to find balance between entertainment and what’s really happening in our world.

Who do you think is the most under-appreciated artist out there right now?  Don Trunk

Who’s in your iPod/radar? T.I. Paperwork album, Sergio Mendes Brasil ‘65, Malik Yusef HOME EP, Ne-Yo f/ Juicy J “She Knows”, Ariana Grande “Love Me Harder”… that’s just this week lol

iiKane 3

What do you want your legacy to be?  To be the best daughter, mother, sister and friend. That I use my talents to better the world and mankind… and enjoy life!

Biggest regret is…. who knows. I’d drive myself crazy if I dwelled on regrets.

Alichia Cruz is a true #RadioChick! You think you know her as one half of The D.A. (co-hosting w/ Dre Johnson, Saturday’s from 3P to 7P on 92Q) but she’s been a spit-fire in this game for a long time.

I met Alichia Cruz (I can’t really remember) after I started working at Radio One and since then, she and I have bonded like true sisters; talking about our children (she’s a mother of two), our relationships, radio, life, you name it!

She’s funny, honest, creative, smart, talented and nurturing. She loves being in radio but being a wife and mother is what she’s most proud of! One of the reasons why I admire her so much! Read her story to find out more.

How long have you been in the radio business?

About 13 years, give or take…I started fresh out of high school and took some breaks in between gigs.

Who helped you get your start in radio?

All of my teachers at The Broadcasting Institute of Maryland were really great mentors, especially my radio instructor, Bill Riley.

Damon Shannon aka D’Shan, former Program Director of WOLB AM (92Q’s Sister Station), was the first person to hire me as an unpaid intern and later put me on payroll as a part-time Board Operator  & Promotions Assistant.  I was so grateful for D’Shan because he was the only Radio One person to respond to my hundreds of voicemails.  I literally called and left messages for every single jock on 92Q and reached out to handful managers on all of the Radio One Baltimore Stations.

George “Wookie” Kreiner, former Programmer of Ocean City’s OC104 FM, gave me my first on-air job or allowed me to audition for it.  I had to compete against two women that had zero radio experience…so yeah, good thing I got that job.  That would have scarred my ego. I was 19 years old and I can’t even tell how overwhelmed I was to get that low paying Morning Co-Host job.  I was sittin’ on top of the world…*cue the Brandy instrumental*

Are females harder to get along with in radio?

I wouldn’t say “harder”…It’s more like “different”.  I feel like sometimes you have to take a little more caution when dealing with certain females but really that also applies to certain men that I’ve come across in the business.  Honestly though, I can’t recall having any issues with any fellow female jocks…I’ve been annoyed a few times but never any real conflict.   I think it could be that we are typically the minority and tend to empathize for each other, especially the moms.  Sadly, radio is not a mom-friendly occupation.

Do you think it’s a lot of competition?

In general yes because there are ton of people that would love to do what we do…. but on a personal level, I really don’t stress over it.  I am probably being overly optimistic and hippy-like saying this but I feel like there is only one Alichia Cruz and as long as I do “me” to the best of my ability, continue to get better, learn, grow, and push myself forward…I will be ok.  I’m only competing with myself.

ALicia Cruz2

What is your LET IT GO song? (one that you would absolutely lose your mind listening to)

I have a few.. I really lose my mind to but the one that has comes to mind is a classic Michael Jackson’s PYT… it takes me back to my debauchery filled bartending days.

You’ve interviewed a lot of celebrities, was there ever a time you had an uncomfortable celeb interview where it went terribly wrong? Describe.

I did a phone interview with legendary director, Bill Duke, once and it was after a long hiatus from being on-air.  I was mainly a production geek during that time and I wasn’t prepared mentally …It was so dry and I really sounded nervous and just extra green.  I’m sure he was like “who gave this rookie my number?”  Luckily I was able to edit the crap out of the audio and salvage my dignity.

Who was the best celebrity encounter and why?

Hands down Paul Mooney!!!Funny part is I wasn’t even in the biz at the time.  I randomly saw him coming out of the Laugh Factory on 42nd in Times Square and with liquid courage, I approached and complimented his work.  To my surprise, Paul looked around and at his watch and said,  “you got somewhere to be? You wanna grab a quick drink right over there?” and pointed to a bar about a block away.  I was stunned but agreed.

So we had a drink .and I got a few questions in but like a true artist /comedian, he was more interested in my life.  I learned that we are both LEOS, which may explain the instant coolness between us…but the most indelible piece of that conversation was he asked about my nationality.

When I told him my dad was from the Philippines, he said

“Oh so you are n***a then!  You know your people are the n***as of Asia!”

I laughed but he didn’t.  He was like “no seriously, look up Negritos. They are little black people that were on those islands before the Asians and Spaniards came along.”

I was amazed.  After our one drink, he hopped in a cab headed up to Harlem and I jumped on the bus back to Jersey, with my mind completely blown.  Did Paul Mooney just take me to school? Why yes he did.  The info he shared was not only funny in it’s delivery but it was accurate.  For this he was the best celeb encounter.

What’s the biggest misconception about you?

Not sure about the biggest but when I meet folks at events, they are shocked that I’m down to earth, easy to talk to, and friendly.

What don’t people get about music when it comes to radio?

I think the main misconception is that the jocks can pick the songs and how often they are played.  Unfortunately, that is not the case in terrestrial radio.

Alicia Cruz

Who do you most admire in the radio industry and why?

I love Wendy Williams.  I don’t get to watch her show much but I love her “come up” story.  I love her honesty and fearlessness.  I know she goes in on people but she also checks herself when needed, well at least in her books.   She was very honest about her past and mistakes.  I respect that.  When I read her autobiography and couldn’t put it down.  I love her tenacity and individuality the most.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you?

Happiness is a choice! Choose to be happy!

& You are what you think.  Meaning your life is just reflection of your thoughts.

If given the chance, I’ve always wanted to try:

Being a jingle singer or being like an Ashanti….and sing some hooks lol.  I’m a beast shower singer.

What’s the biggest misconception about women in radio?

We’re all DIVA-like.

Where do you see urban radio in the next 10-15 years?

I see it becoming more sophisticated and creative…but maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

What do you think is wrong, if you do, with hip hop and R&B?

There is a lack of depth, soul, truth in most hip-hop and R&B…and I think of the urban music we hear focuses on the superficial.  Don’t get me wrong I’m not a prude but some balance would be nice.  I love a good ratchet or party song like the rest, but I also like substance.  I haven’t too much substance in a while.

Who do you think is the most underappreciated artist out there right now?

Beyonce, lol just kidding.  I do think however, that in certain industry circles, Rihanna, doesn’t get the props she deserves.  She was an Island girl with regular poor island parents.  She was a wild card, I’m sure.  She gets flack for her lack of range but the girl has hits, many hits.

I also think B.O.B. is underappreciated.  He is a true musician that actually plays instruments.  He can also really rap and freestyle…he got them bars son..   I think he doesn’t get as much street love because he’s had so much mainstream crossover success.

And I think Fabolous is underappreciated, as well…I think he has the rare talent of rapping to women without sounding corny or trying to be sexy.  He makes you forget all about that janky tooth.

alicia cruz and mayor marion barry

Who’s in your iPod/radar?

I really like the new B.O.B song and I’m interested in hearing more as he progresses.  I think he’ll be around for a minute or two.  I’m also still rocking loving the Beyonce album..i love how she flipped game and went against the grain.  Courageous…ballsy…love it!

What do you want your legacy to be?

Deep question… A great mother, an innovator, a good person and I hope to inspire as many people as I can in this life.

alicia and dre

Biggest regret is….

I don’t have any.  I needed to have all the setbacks and bad experiences to grow, be humbled, understand my strengths and value what’s most important.  The only thing I would say to my past self if I could is…

Don’t rush,

don’t show all your cards,

nothing great comes easy and

make this life your masterpiece.

A Personal Message: Don’t EVER Give Up! [Video]

promo-pic.jpg

When mom would tell me, “think before you speak, child”, I didn’t know what she was talking about until I was an adult; debating an argument about something I felt so passionately about.

My dad would tell me “be a leader and not a follower, baby”.  Lead, but wait on your turn and don’t follow everyone else’s lead. They may not be headed in your direction.

dont-quit1

My parents’ intentions were honest and heartfelt because they knew from their life experiences, I would face a possible reenactment (and I did).

Recently, I have been challenged with a real life lesson that causes me to hold in my inside urges to shout “UNFAIR” or “THIS IS WRONG” from a mountain top. The saying “keep it cute and put it on mute”, helps me to hold my tongue and rely on my spiritual relationship to take lead. HOLD THAT THOUGHT (literally).

don't give up 1

I have family and friends who continue to teach me in my adult life. I’ve been challenged so many times about family, finances, career, education, parenthood, etc. The old saying “you’re never too big for your britches”  and “you’ll understand when you get older” makes perfect sense right now.

This life lesson is called PATIENCE. I’m witnessing my friends (women) practice patience, faith, forgiveness and understanding more so now than ever before. But how did they learn patience? Life lessons.

don't quit

We’re praying together, listening to one another, and becoming a stronger unified front; something I didn’t think (as embarrassing as this is to admit) I’d ever see. Glad I didn’t give up on that.

If I would have given up on my career, I wouldn’t be here talking to you about it. I struggled with finances and fears for years. I one day, prayed to GOD, asking him to TAKE THE WHEEL and HE did. I walked out on faith. I realized that there is a BIGGER PICTURE.

climbing mountain

Keep praying! Keep worshiping! Keep hoping! Keep learning! Understand there is a reason for everything! What’s the reason? I’m not sure what it is for you, but for me, it’s to help someone who may have to go through the same thing. And my advice to them would be to NEVER GIVE UP!

Romans 12:11-12

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
